Norfolk Roofs

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Here in Norfolk, Virginia, being the oldest region in the country, we have some of the oldest roofs and widest variety of roofs in America. We have everything from slate, cement tile, asbestos, cedar, metal and tar and gravel to the newer types, like asphalt singles, synthetic slate and rubber.

Deciding whether or not to get a new roof depends on the type of roof you have and the condition of the roof. If you have a slate, cement tile, asbestos or metal roof you may want to repair instead of replacing. If at least 75% of your roof is still intact it is probably more cost effective to repair the roof. If you have an asphalt or cedar shingle roof, a visual inspection will most likely tell you what you need to know. If your shingles are curling or starting to blow off, it is probably time for a new roof.

Roofing / Siding Contractors – Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth

turrettWhen choosing a roofing or siding contractor, or any contractor, require them to provide proof of insurance and business license. Most of the time the lowest price is from an unlicensed and uninsured contractor. When an employee of an uninsured contractor gets hurt, the first thing they realize is that they can’t put in a claim for workers comp. The second thing they realize is that they need a lawyer. The lawyer will tell them that there are 2 parties to go after, the contractor and the homeowner. Since the contractor has nothing but some old pickup trucks and the homeowner obviously has at least a home… well, you can guess who they are going to go after.

Also ask if they use sub-contractors. When a company uses sub-contractors they are restricted by the IRS in how much say they have in how the sub-contractor performs their work. Many sub-contractors only care about one thing, getting the job done fast. The sub-contractor does not provide the warranty on the work so they really don’t care about the quality. When a sub-contractor wears out their welcome with a company they just move on to the next one.

If a company has employees, they are paid by the hour and are not as worried about getting the job done fast. An hourly employee is more worried about quality because that is how they are judged by the company and their fellow employees.
