Greatest -  If you did wish to upgrade to the best windows on the market, our next choice is the #1 rated replacement window according to J.D. Power & Associates, theSimonton 5500 series window is the best vinyl replacement window. It is not only an extremely quality window, but it looks great.

Will you be tricking or will you be treating?

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

My wife and I love the approach of late October. The temperature is just right, fall colors are beautiful and our favorite holiday is just is within sight. Everyone has their favorite holiday whether it’s Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter or Flag Day but for some the one linked to the Celtic holiday of Samuin (“sow-in” pronounced) or “summer’s end” and later rooted in the Scottish tradition of “All-Hallows-Eve” (All Hallows Evening) or as recognized in the Catholic Church as “the evening before All Saints Day” which is celebrated on November 1.

There are many different paths a person can take in decorating and celebrating Halloween. There is the traditional religious way, devoid of costumes and house decoration celebrating the night before All Saints Day. This day is followed on November 2nd by All Soul’s Day – a day centered around those souls still held in purgatory.

Another path often taken in celebrating Halloween is that celebration involving masks, trickery and the collecting and eating of tiny packages of sugary candy – after parents inspect these packages for safety. This is where houses are decorated with seasonally correct lighting of black and orange (historically correct celebrating the fall season ending) and spooky figures pasted to windows or propped on the front lawn.

Our house is a celebration of the season and also a celebration of masks and generally scariness. While we carve pumpkins and place a candle inside we are following this custom derived from Ireland and Scotland whereby turnips were carved into lanterns as a way of remembering the souls held in purgatory. As this custom came to the United States turnips were no longer used due to their diminutive size and the abundance of pumpkins on this side of the wash. My wife and I carve pumpkins because it is something fun a family can do together and because we like to see who can produce the scariest or silliest.

We mix corn stalks, scarecrows and scary carved pumpkins among our more recent Halloween decorations. This past year we took it a step further and in the spirit of scaring and entertaining the local Trick-Or-Treaters decorated our house with the emphasis on the supernatural and with an edge to scare. We use inexpensive dry ice to create a fog affect out front by keeping everything concealed behind one of our hedges in front. We keep all window curtains drawn closed and use a light, somewhat see-thru fabric. All lights in these rooms are kept off and we plug in a white strobe light. Each window flashes slowly at a different time. Out on the front lawn we have corn stalks scattered among a few headstones. One basic wooden casket lies off to the side the walkway and I hid in it until the kids were up at the door. Once at the door (observed though some 1/4″ holes cut discreetly into the sides) I slowly creeped out using a mask found online and scared the kids. Inside the house we kept all lights off and used candles placed safely instead to better suit the mood. My wife was in her own gore costume handing out the candy.

There are many different ways to decorate your house for Halloween it just depends on your taste, style, religion views and budget. You can decide on a religious theme, a seasonal theme, a horror theme or any mix of them. Just make it fun and reflect your style.
