Vinyl Replacement Windows

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Here are a couple of things about vinyl windows the consumer should know:

SHGC – (Solar Heat Gain Coefficent) This is how much heat will come through your windows and heat your house. If you live up north you may want a high number so that as much heat as possible will come in. If you have no shade around your house and have a problem cooling your house in the summer then this is a big deal for you. The lower the number the less heat that is going to come in, .30 is a good number but around .20 is a very good number for todays vinyl windows.

U Factor – This is how much heat escapes through your window. Once again you want this number to be low, around .30 is , once again a good number

Visible Transmittance- This is how much damaging light will come through the window. Once again the lower the number the better, .40 – .50 is good.

Low E- This is the coating on the glass that blocks the harmful UV rays

Argon- This is the insulating gas between the panes of glass

Welded corners- Some windows are only held together at the corners by angle brackets and screws, these windows are very flimsy and do not stay square. A window that is not square will not close properly and will not seal completely. Welded corners are fused together and much stronger.
